Why is planning so important?
Planning for a child's college education has become increasingly important in recent years because there are so many variables involved and so many details to consider. Proper planning can help families avoid costly mistakes in college placement, college choice and selection, and financial aid.
Won't most middle and upper income families simply not qualify for financial aid?
Not true. However, this belief creates a situation where the families do not put the effort or time into investigating the process. They assume, because their friends and family have not qualified for aid, they won't either.
Isn't it true that only the best academic students, athletes or minorities will receive aid?
Often, top students do not receive the best financial aid because they apply to schools that do not award merit aid. Colleges are looking for under-represented students. Many students can make up this group.
Won't the financial aid package be the same at every school?
Colleges are all looking for great students, and they are all looking for a different type of student. Matching your children to the school that is looking for them is critical in getting the best offer.
Isn't the cost of attendance what the majority of students pay?
There are students on campus paying 100% of the cost of attendance, and there are many students paying much less than that.
How important, really, are the financial aid rules and deadlines?
Many families do not know or understand financial aid rules. They assume that they follow the Federal tax rules. Many institutions and private scholarship programs use the data from the FAFSA and CSS Profile to determine how their aid will be awarded - all the more reason the forms need to be completed accurately and on time.
